Rossini's The Barber of Seville

This was the third revival of an almost 30 year old production but Richard Wilcocks in Bachtrack (October 8, 2015) spoke of "Opera North's supremely theatrical Barber of Seville" saying that "If it works don't fix it" and giving praise all round for the production, playing, singing and acting. Martin Dreyer (The York Press, October 13, 2015) was more nuanced although seeing it as the best cast of the four productions with Gavin Ring singled out for particular praise.  However, he was still not comfortable with the "play within a play" concept and thought that the orchestra played too fast on occasion. Alfred Hickling (The Guardian, October 8, 2015) also found much to praise in the cast - Gavin Ring displayed "a natural, nicely sardonic baritone and has all the patter off pat", while Katie Bray impressed with "both the emotion and colour of voice to support Rosina‚Äôs challenging range" - but thought the production was showing its age.
